Dubai and Abu Dhabi, among other emirates, remain among the most popular destinations for ex-pats looking to change their lives by finding work or starting their businesses. Foreigners must begin planning their new life after moving to the UAE, renting or purchasing a home, or searching for Property For Sale Dubai. Where can you get an account to pay for utility connections? How will you pay your bills? All these questions arise in the minds of foreigners who have relocated to the country. In this blog, we have decided to provide you with important information about utility connections in the UAE to make your life as an ex-pat easier.
Water & Electricity in Regional authorities provide UAE Utilities in the country:
The energy sector is essential in UAE policy, and most of the country’s electricity is generated using natural gas-fired generation. To meet the growing energy demand, the UAE government plans to invest AED 600 billion (USD 163 billion) to support the country and its citizens. The country’s water is supplied by desalinated seawater and groundwater. Water in the UAE is safe to drink, but it is recommended that you buy a water filter or bottled water to avoid problems.
In the UAE, a G plug is used. This plug is also used in the UK, Singapore, and Hong Kong. The voltage and frequency are typically 220V and 50Hz.
The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is in charge of the city’s water and electricity supply. The property owner who wishes to access it should apply to DEWA. Tenants can also do this at designated Ejari centres only after registering their tenancy contract.

In Dubai, How Do You Pay Your Utility Bills?
Bills are sent out once a month, and the majority of businesses provide autopay services. Dubai residents, for example, can always check their bills online at the official DEWA website. It is critical to note that having a bank account after moving to the UAE is required not only for receiving your salary, saving or investing but also for your daily needs. This article explains how residents and non-residents can open a bank account in Dubai, what documents are required, and which Emirati banks are the most reputable.
The DEWA bill includes a flat rate that rises with increased electricity and water consumption, a fuel surcharge, and a 5% VAT on tariffs. When you receive a bill, you can see your name, account number, monthly electricity and water usage, bill total, bill date, and so on.
The account holder must pay the amount after receiving a bill. In case of non-payment, you will receive up to three reminder emails and text message notifications. Your electricity gets disconnected after 14 days of the due date. To regain access to the services, you must first pay the debt and, in most cases, a reactivation fee.
If you intend to go on vacation (or to your home country) and leave Dubai for an extended period, you may be interested in learning more about DEWA’s Away Mode. First and foremost, you should set your air conditioner to auto mode at 27° C, which will assist you in preventing damage caused by humidity and heat. Then you’ll have to:
* Go to the DEWA website.
* Turn on Away Mode by entering your DEWA account number, the OTP you will receive via SMS, and the dates of your absence.
* Choose how frequently you want to receive DEWA notifications to see daily/weekly water consumption and avoid anomalies.
* Submit the form after filling in the details of the email.
* DEWA will send you a letter and a confirmation message.
